totally Trini

One of the best things about our Trinidad vacations is how much it feels like home.  That expectation’s should be a little unrealistic- we moved to the States in time for me to start kindergarten, and I didn’t return to the island until I was a grown woman. But from the time I feel the humid air at Piarco, Trinidad embraces.

pimp carnival pad

Part of it is our guest quarters.  My aunt Annemarie hosts us all (David and I, our besties Erin and Craig, my mom, aunt and uncle, my cousin and her new fiancé- a whole crew!) at her lovely home, and it’s perfect for playtime and partying… ‘liming’ is the Trini translation. She’s just the most gracious hostess, and makes her home a pleasure for us to visit.

Auntie has the loveliest ladies helping her at home. They spoil us rotten, and take such good care of us.  Mrs Rose and her daughter kept us in literal feasts, and Mrs Rhona (to my mom’s right) kept us in stitches too. We always joke that their goal is to fatten us up till our costumes don’t fit- these women are some talented cooks.

More on Trini food in an upcoming post… Back to the party! says Auntie Angela. ?

The house pretty much has a revolving door, so the soca music starts the party early in the morning, and it goes all day. Aunties and family and friends stream in and out as Craig, the most patient bartender in the world, keeps drinks full and strong. Poolside is a sociable place to be in the Trini heat on the days we stay in.

Each of us maxes out our duty -free purchase upon arrival in Trinidad, and we stock the bar. Absolut Karnival is a bit of a thing on our trips- it’s a local market limited edition, flavored with passion fruit and orange blossom, and we drink it with soda, lime and bitters. When we’re not drinking rum, that is.  We drink a lot of rum. It’s a Trini ting.

The house has plenty: people, food and drink, bright colors, photos of my auntie’s winning carnival costumes. And Lola, my aunt’s parrot- she’s something else.  My mom taught her to say my name on a previous trip, and hand to g-d if Lola doesn’t call for me incessantly. Bless his heart, Craig spent some time trying to teach her other names, but no such luck.. She only wanted to sqwawk ‘vayna, vayna’ ad infinitum every time she saw me or heard my name.

If you visit our family, someone’s going to tell you about the savannah, (Queen’s Savannah Park), and claim it as the largest roundabout in the world. I don’t know about all that (proof or it didn’t happen), but it’s home to good stuff. Aside from the carnival festivities it hosts, there are vendors of every stripe dotted along the roundabout all the time- fruit, drinks, oyster shooters, kebab, roti, and more.

For us, it’s always about going to see the coconut man.  Normally we’d do oysters, then coconuts but we kept missing the oysterman. It’s not like the street food vendors are on some kind of easily accessible schedule, and rumor and routine are only so reliable on Trini time.

Coconut water in bottle or can can be as cold-pressed and raw as it wants, but it can’t compare to a fresh Trini coconut hacked open. After all the water has been drunk,  the coconut and machete meet again, to expose the yummy coconut jelly ready for eating.

We’re always interested in shopping local, seeing markets, and engaging with the vendors. We made a trip with Auntie Annemarie out to El Soccoro Road, where lots of fruit vendors are. The produce is arranged prettily, like at an American farmer’s market, but the varieties differ greatly.  I was totally intrigued by the fresh pigeon peas in their pod, and the assortment of chilis made me realize exactly why homemade Trini hot sauce is so good.

chickens and eggs

chicken strutt

Our girls are huge, it seems! As far as chickens go, they are actually on the small side, but they have just grown so much, so quickly.

dr. robotnik chicken brown ameraucana hen

Once they made it out of the awkward teenager stage, they began to look totally different.  Nugget is the fluffy-cheeked blonde, while Mimosa’s rocking the red mohawk.  She looks a bit suspiciously roosterlike, but she’s definately a hen. Both of these ladies are supposedly Easter Eggers, but we think Mimosa is crossed with Rhode Island Red- her appearance and blush eggs are my clues, but I’m really just learning from Google over here.

easter eggers grazingchicken coupbackyard chicken dust bath backyard ameraucana dust bath

I can’t even believe I actually feel this way about chickens,  but they are really cute.  They are adorably codependent- they follow each other all over the backyard and will call for each other if separated. They are especially adorable dust bathing – they fluff up and shake and roll and it’s pretty precious.

feeding-chickensbackyard-chicken-collage

To be honest, apples aren’t falling far from the tree over here. These girls are assertive and opinionated, for sure! They’re more often that not a bit big for their britches- Nugget is happy to help herself to a snack, and seems very intent on roosting as high as possible in the yard, ideally on top of their cabin.

backyard chicken escape

Sometimes they’re super cuddly, and other times they are having absolutely none of it, and will go squawking away. The chicken jailbreaking actually got a little out of hand for a bit, with frequent uninvited visits to the neighbors.    Nugget even went for a brief swim in the neighbors pool, till David hopped the fence on lifeguard duty.

chicken wingschicken fly

So to limit the chicken capers, we had a little wing trim session. I watched a few YouTube videos, and it was quick, easy, and totally painless to trim their flight wings so they can’t make it over our (rather tall) fence. You can spot Mimosa’s haircut in the above pictures if you look carefully…. it’s not exactly super even!

stash backyard chicken eggs

But I think the naughtiest thing that happened was the egg hidey-hole situation.  After the first few eggs from Mimosa, and just one aqua egg from Nugget, they went on an apparent strike- no eggs for over a week. After a literal egg-hunt in the backyard, we found a dozen and a half eggs hidden in the wild sage!

backyard chicken pink eggs vintage egg scale

Their eggs are pretty tiny- above with a quail egg, and an xl white store egg for a comparison.  At first, some barely tipped the egg scale, but nowadays most are almost or into medium sized.

egg comparision

They’re obviously richly colored compared to the store egg, and stunningly more tasty. They make the most incredible carbonara, and scrummy fried eggs, and everything else. We feed the girls organic layer feed, lots of kitchen scraps, and plenty of treats and grit, so these are some spoiled chicks.

wind blown ameraucana

I’m clearly obsessed with these girls, so bonus windblown chicken picture (how hysterical are they?) if you made it through all this chicken chat!

a disneyland date

Walt Disney said it best, “Disneyland is a work of love.”

0N9A1556 0N9A1555

And when spring flowers are in bloom and the sun is shining bright, it’s hard not to feel the magic in the air! A few weeks ago (when I was still a brunette), we drove to Anaheim for a weekday Disneyland date, and it was a super fun time.

0N9A1594 0N9A1597

We’re fortunate enough to go to Disneyland several times a year, since we live only about an hour away.  We’re no fans of theme park lines (like anyone is?) so we also wander, people watch, and eat.  And when it comes to Disneyland food, Dole whip floats (pineapple soft serve and pineapple juice) are my absolute favorite.

0N9A1651 0N9A1654

I’m generally pretty flexible about which rides we hit- I’m up for whatever lines aren’t too obnoxious. But I’m a total five-year-old at heart, and I have a total weak spot for the teacups.  It’s a must-ride, every time. David spins it so fast, and I love it!

0N9A1688 0N9A1696 0N9A1694

And no day is complete without some shenanigans.  No luck at hitchhiking in Cars Land, but some skipping and dipping made me giggle.

0N9A1784 0N9A1773 0N9A1779

We had our cute friend Nicole join us, and we had such a good time with her- we always do! When she wasn’t cracking me up, she was behind the camera for the majority of this post’s images.  But we were Minnie twinning, so I made sure to have David grab some shots of us, too.

We made sure to instagram a shot of our ears, to help raise funds for the Make-A-Wish foundation. Every hashtag of #shareyourears garnered a $5 donation, in honor of Disneyland’s 60th birthday. A total of 2 million dollars was raised to grant wishes for terminal kids, and it’s nice to have played even the tiniest part.

unicorn hair

unicorn-lavender-hair

If you follow me on snapchat (loveRavayna) or instagram, you may have peeped my new ‘do… and realized that I’ve upgraded my lifelong brunette hair to a multicolor pastel mane. Letting my inner unicorn out to play, I’m giving My Little Pony a run for her money.

unicorn-hair-silver unicorn-hair-purple-flip

A color melt of silver and smoke, lilac, lavender, and rose, slate and sapphire- my hair is practically a work of art! I’m obsessed with it, to be honest. Butterfly Loft Salon was kind enough to have me in as a model for an incredible new vivid haircolor line, Pulp Riot. I’d been feeling blah about my hair for a while, so was ready for something fresh.

salon 6 salon 1

I’m so, SO fortunate to have worked with such an amazing team. Linh Phan is one of the artists behind the Pulp Riot brand, and is incredible- he manipulates hair color like watercolor. He envisioned my hair as a smoky lavender, with peeks of slate and rose gold. I was wound tight about bleaching it half to death, but he assured me that careful application and B3 reconstructor would help preserve my mop. I trusted him, along with his precious assistant Niki, so I turned over creative control to the talented pair, accepted a cocktail and settled in for a beast of a bleaching. All told, I was at the salon for almost eight hours, and it was worth it.

salon 2

Four hours in, they’d lifted my lengths from a level 3 to a level 9 and darkened my roots with a granite color, and I’d recognized that life as a blonde is not a good choice for me. The Butterfly Circus environment is so supportive, and I loved the creative collaboration from all the talented stylists. After a little powwow, it was hair painting time.

salon 5 salon 3

Linh popped in his headphones and got down to the nitty gritty, rocking out as he melted metallic pastel colors into a deep blue root, yet preserved the clarity of icy silver ends.  I was processed, rinsed and styled- and was blown away when I finally saw the reveal. So grateful for these talented darlings!

salon 4 matching-unicorn-hair-nails unicorn hair purple

I’ve never before taken such a leap with my look, but it is exhilarating! I will note that I’m surprised by just how much attention it garners- strangers regularly comment and compliment, which is incredibly flattering but totally unexpected in a city like LA.

unicorn lavender hair angel wings unicorn-blue-hair-angel-wings-dlta unicorn-blue-hair-war-paint-wall

I find myself wanting to wear more black than ever, and have had to stop myself from color-coordinating my clothes and hair… I love me some mitchy-matchy. I’m still a huge fan of these ear jackets, via my beloved Stella & Dot stylist (don’t hesitate to shop with her) and am always into the perfect Schiaparelli pink lipstick.

A mane like this is so fun to style- straight or curly, the color adds so much dimension. And though I’ve noticed some bleach dryness, the damage has actually given my lank hair a welcome volume boost. I swear I must be  prepping for a shampoo commercial with all the hair tossing I’ve been doing lately.

flat lay

It may just look pretty pink and blue, but color like this takes serious work to maintain.  Fantasy colors are not permanent, so they fade with every wash- though freezing water and color care products like this shampoo, conditioner, and reconstructor from B3 help. Violet shampoo keeps the color icy, and pastel purple overtone helps up the lilac level. You can probably spot the fade (specifically of the navy and rose shades) in the above pictures- the black sequin shots were taken two washes after the images in the black teeshirt. I’m loving the evolution!

With hair color like this, a ponytail pops and a simple braid becomes a statement. It’s without a doubt my favorite accessory for the spring!

my funny valentine

I almost can’t believe that this year makes a dozen Valentine’s Day I’ve spent with this sweet man. What’s that they say about time flying when you’re having fun?

argo-coupleone-second

Granted, we haven’t always celebrated on February 14th- we spent several years in a long distance relationship, and I don’t always get a lot of say over my pageant travel schedule. This Valentine’s Day, I’m in Dallas at a pageant with my girls and moms while he’s at home and work in LA.

two-seconds

two-more

Celebrating love a little early, we spent a sunshiny day with the fabulous Nicole of Nicole Renard Photography, and I just love all the sweet Valentine’s Day shots she captured. Nicole and I have several collaborations in the works for this year, so you’ll be seeing more of her around the blog for sure.

another-one

David got me this bright red scooter as wedding present, and I’ll be honest that he rides it all the time while I’m pretty wimpy about it still. I need to take a safety course before I feel road-ready solo, but I feel totally secure and love riding as his passenger…. Look Ma, no hands!

really-last-oneyayIMG_9905

Because it seems like no Valentine’s Day is complete without at least a little sappiness, I’ve got a dozen reasons I’m glad David’s my husband and Valentine. #smugmarrieds

IMG_9933

IMG_9939

He’s funny as hell. Obviously, as an improvisor and comedian, making people laugh is his wheelhouse. But I have a picky sense of humor, and am very often not amused when others are rolling with laughter. Yet David cracks me up on a regular basis.

IMG_9947

He indulges my quirks. Far from typical, I’d prefer a pet goat to a puppy. I would rather arrange my own grocery-store flowers than receive a fancy bouquet, and regularly have power tools on my gift list. Weird is my way, and he’s happy to oblige.

poppin-bottles

He believes in me religiously. Though I wish it wasn’t the case, I can be very insecure- yet it’s much easier to believe in yourself when someone else believes in me first. He always does, and never hesitates to tell me so.

IMG_9957

Those blue eyes. Lawd- deep, piercing, practically iridescent as they change with his moods… I’m already beseeching the universe for a baby with their daddy’s eyes. (Someday…. don’t get too excited people.)

IMG_9983

Our shared history. We’ve been together just about our entire adult lives, so there’s a lot of memories over those dozen years. There’s something special about having grown up and evolved together- and to know that he ‘knew me when” and has loved me through my worst and best.

IMG_9973

He’s practically my personal lightning rod. He can pull me from the depths of a panic attack with a few firm words, ground me in a stressful situation with just a look or a hug. For someone as prone to anxiety as me, his ability to gauge and regulate my mood is an immeasurable gift.

IMG_9965

He’s stellar at backing me up and bailing me out. Whether it’s sous-chefing and doing the chopping and kitchen prep, masterminding pageant schedules and invoicing, or problem-solving a crisis, I know I just need to say the word and he’s got me.

IMG_9964

He’s so amazing with children. Watching him with our clients, friends’s babies, and even random kids in the grocery store, I’m already impressed by his patience and affection… He’s going to be an incredible father.

IMG_9971

He’s so patient and tolerant when it comes to my whims. Whether it’s trying every flavor at the ice cream store, being a superior Instagram husband, or spoiling me with a glass-fronted display case for my shoes, he rarely puts a stop to my shenanigans without good reason.

IMG_0065

He’s an over-the-top partner. In a world where an even 50-50 split can be a struggle, he never fails to go above and beyond, make me feel special, and spoil me rotten.

IMG_9998

He’s a hottie. Sorrynotsorry if that’s totally shallow, but it’s true. More often than not, I find myself ogling… He’s distracting! And, like fine wine- instead of getting paunchy in his thirties, he’s getting stronger and sexier.

IMG_0016

Our future. It gives me the warm fuzzies just to think about the lifetimes together ahead of us. What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t happened yet.

spoiling my valentines, long distance

galentines-ready-to-mail

One of the things I like least about living in Los Angeles is that the majority of my closest girlfriends don’t. Several are still in New Orleans, others in Denver and DC, NYC and Chicago. If we were all in LA, I’d totally be hosting a festive floral Galentine’s lunch, but I had to be a little more creative and employ USPS to spoil my sweeties this Valentine’s Day.

galenties-box-makinggalentines-lipsticks-and-nailpolish

Planning ahead, I had scored a tarte lipsurgence gift set at ulta during their awesome holiday sale. I broke it up, choosing one for each girl, and used my Silhouette to cut little triangular boxes out of pink glitter damask and chevron card stock, as well as some recycled Vera Bradley file folders. I also included a nail polish or pair of mini polishes, and  some classic conversation hearts!

galentines-polish-boxes galentines-gold-sticker galentines-addressing-envelope

Finding any excuse to practice my handlettering, I had a little fun decorating them. I’m a total Targetaholic, and am still loving these gold-and-white washi tapes and labels from Sugar Paper‘s holiday collection. And the dollar spot came through with some darling Valentine’s stickers to add a little more love to these pretty pink packages.

I’ll own it’s a totally manufactured Hallmark holiday, but regardless, I adore these ladies, and loved sending them a little sweetness this Valentine’s Day.

cute new chicks

We had been thinking about increasing the Coe flock this year, and then the sweetest little chicks spontaneously came into our lives.

One of our clients (little Macie in the pink) is a tweenage poultry farmer at home, and a talented magician on the pageant stage. Pulling a live chick from a hat is far more impressive than a toy one, but avian flu forbade her from bringing her Silkies from home. Her family ordered a pair of Easter Egger chicks to the host hotel,  and post-pageant, we inherited these sweet girls.

national-chick david-and-the-chicks

They came to us as wee little Prettyboy and ShittyShittyBangBang, just 3 weeks old.  We tried a handful of names before settling on Mimosa Bouvier and Nugget Beauregard Coe, IV… purposefully presumptuous poultry names.  Our friends with flocks of their own warned us they would outgrow the fluffball stage astonishingly fast, so we  attempted weekly photo shoots, proud parent style, with varying success.

chick-babies baby-chicks-1 drunk-chicks

chickens-first-steps

They got their first taste of freedom when we put them down in the grass. They were still living under a heat lamp in a brooder, so the great outdoors overwhelmed them- they just stood there in shock!

sassy-chicks

Mimosa (on the left) has had her stinkeye down from an early age. She’s a wild one, that chick.

flirty-chickstweens-chickensthe-chickens-5mimosa-on-the-move

Once they sprouted their adult feathers, they seemed to grow up overnight! The more teenagery and independent the chicks have gotten, the more hysterical our outtakes from their weekly photo shoots have been.

blond-americuna-chickenblond-easter-egger-chicken

Mimosa boycotted week twelve’s shoot altogether, flying out of my hands, scampering away, and generally misbehaving. She was far more interested in exploring the garden than posing. Nugget reveled in the undivided attention and preened away.

chicken-coup   nesting-box-chicken

Once these girls were grown enough, we moved them out to their new cabin. I enjoy woodworking, but was too skeptical of my skills to build from scratch, so we ordered one from an artisan in Washington. It came flat packed in a giant box with some truly terrible pictogram directions, but we had it assembled in just a few hours.

the-chickens-drunk-mimosa chicken-climb-stairschickens-hen-house nugget-fish-eye thug-girls-the-chickens

They were utterly cofounded by the stairs at first, but slowly figured it out and have settled in a treat.  They know where home is- they run straight in when startled (like by recent El Niño rains) and cozy up there often.

mimosa-strutting nugget-tries-to-flythe-chickens-2

That said, they are literally clucking happy to be set free to explore each day.  They are adorably codependent- Mimosa has a sqawky little meltdown and frantically catches up with Nugget if she strays too far.  Nugget just puffs her blond feathers- she’s totally alpha chicken.

the-chickens-1 jungle-chickens dust-bathig-chickens

These pretty teenage girls are still a ways from their laying days- they’ve got some growing to do. But I’m beyond excited for our first eggs this spring- I can’t wait to see what color these girls lay! Their proper breed is Ameraucana, heritage hens that lay pastel eggs-  often blue and aqua, but also green and pink. I feel like with coloring so different, their eggs should be as well, but we will see. In the meantime, they’re quite content scratching and pecking merrily away, dust bathing (the cutest thing!) for hours, inspecting under leaves and in branches and eating grass.

chickens-drink-watereaster-egger-chickens teenage-chicks

They are bird brained in the best possible way, and so funny to watch. We have taken to eating lunch outside with them most days we’re home and are kindof infatuated with their silliness- I snapchat them incessantly. I’m not sure I would have ever seen myself venturing into chicken keeping, but I’m settling into the chickenlady lifestyle quite nicely, feeding them all kinds of kitchen scraps and already petitioning David for one or two more chicks later in the year.

We’re learning as we go, and researching like mad along the way, but I’m pretty geeked out by this little adventure in urban homesteading. I’m looking forward to all it entails, and sharing the shenanigans along the way.

the friday five     002  pink

As I was gathering items for this post, I realized that I was ‘pinking out’ without planning it. Apt for October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, though I’m no big fan of the rampant pink-washing by corporations for the most meager donation. That said, I stand firmly with Planned Parenthood, and it lines up with their recent public statements as well. All that boils down to is, ladies, take care of your health!

Bioderma Crealine: Micellar water has started to gain popularity here in the States, and this French version is my absolute favorite. A few swipes and any grime or makeup, even waterproof mascara, is history. No need to rinse after, your skin will look clean and be refreshed. It’s so much cheaper in Europe, so I brought home multiple bottles.

Dior Addict Lip Glow Color Reviver Balm: This lip balm glides on to moisturize without a hint of stickiness.  And don’t be put off by the overly Barbie shade it appears in the tube- this sheer gloss reacts with your body and reads the most flattering soft pink, your lips but better. They’ll still be feeling cushiony several hours later. And the tube itself is so pretty, too.

Bougainvillea: I love the way it sounds, rolling off the tongue, and the way it looks, decking our cul-de-sac in a wild cascade of hot pink ruffles. It climbs up our house, too, framing the window in front of my desk with a shock of color. I’ve been piling handfuls and armfuls into bowls and onto trays all summer long. They’re starting to to fade for the year, and even though they are the furthest thing from fancy, practically a weed, I’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Vintage jewelry box: I was in Denver with my girlfriends a few weeks ago and scored this rosy beauty for a screaming deal at a vintage shop.  It’s in incredible condition, and I’m loving having a better way to organize my baubles.

Kate Spade card holder: My everyday wallet is a Lacey, and it’s just too big for some handbags and clutches.  That’s when this is perfect- with an interior pocket and 3 card slots, it’s perfect for just the essentials! Id, cash, card, and business cards and I’m good to go with tons of room to spare.

I’m in New York this weekend for a little work and a little play.  Hope y’all have a lovely weekend as well!

a malibu beach day

Despite a scorching SoCal summer, a full agenda and travel schedule have kept us running, with minimal time for relaxing. Though we’re into October, the weather’s not been reflecting that at all- it broke 100` this weekend. So last week, we played hooky one day and headed up to Malibu for a day at the seaside.

We loaded up bags and coolers,  packing charcuterie and salads, watermelon and wine, and carefully hiked along the cliff path down to the cove. I unpacked our picnic as David mixed mimosas and managed a little music, and we had a lovely little lunch by the sea.

Though it directly disobeys posted rules, I almost always bring sturdy glass and stoneware on a beach picnic. We pack it back out and take it home to wash- so we’re never leaving broken glass behind and I feel better about not adding disposables to overflowing landfills.

Despite the gorgeous weather, the beach was just about deserted. It was so lovely to feel like we had the whole seashore to ourselves. It’s rare that you get to escape the crowds in Los Angeles, so I treasure these moments of peace among the madness.

The summer heat wave means that our section of the Pacific is the warmest it’s been in decades.  For the past few years, I’ve barely gone past wading in the chilly waves, but it was warm enough for this cold water wimp to enjoy.

As a frank side note, part of me thinks it’s crazy that I’m sharing unretouched bikini photos here. As a former pageant girl who used to care an unhealthy amount about other’s opinions of my body, I spent most of my adult life horrifically insecure about my figure. But I’ve reached a point where I literally could not care less- if a lump or bump or lack thereof offends you, just keep scrolling past. In this way, I’m beyond grateful for the wisdom of age- and the cognizance that strong is far sexier than skinny, and to know that insecurity is a waste of time. I work out and eat (mostly) healthy to fuel my body and be fit enough to handle my crazy life, but #badonkadonk. ?

You know the best way to get a bikini body? Put on a bikini and smile.

So that’s exactly what I do, and on days like this gorgeous one- it makes for a beautiful time reveling in the seaside sunshine.

These are the moments…
