Asher turns 2 at home

One of the traditions I feel strongly about is a little family birthday party. Of course, there will be years we do big bashes (more on that later!), but I want Asher to know the magic of a homemade birthday- balloons, a candle in your breakfast, and a birthday cake homemade by his mama. We do a balloon in bed situation that’s pretty cute too (last year’s).

Speaking of cake- I wanted to give the baby what he loves.  Two of his favorite foods are stone fruit and cheese, so that inspired his cake.  If it’s good enough for Deb’s kid birthday, it’s good enough for my kid’s birthday , so I made smitten kitchen’s peaches and cream cake with a mix of white peaches, nectarines, plums. and pluots from the farmers’ market, and it was was perfect! I topped with cream cheese frosting.

In full transparency, I tried a new recipe for stabilized whipped cream cheese frosting and it was total bust. It didn’t hold shape and I could taste the flour.  The discards made a yummy pancake base though- I hate food waste so much! I mixed in flour and eggs till I got the right cooking consistency, and served them with applesauce.

In further transparency, I think Asher only ate one bite of cake? He was more interested in trying to grab for stuff while we were taking these pictures than the actual cake, and quickly escaped to attempt to knock over the tripod. Toddlers. We did the smash situation for pictures for his first birthday, but I don’t love mess or wasting food, and he wasn’t ultra-enthusiastic, so that’s not something I push for. I forked him up a bite to feed it to him, and he was all the faces as he ate- he’s had very little processed sugar/ dessert in his life, so he’s always wide-eyed over it, though he hasn’t quite developed the taste for it yet. He did love mama’s cream cheese frosting, so had a few more licks of that before he wandered away. and David, I, and the neighbors we shared it with loved it.

As far as links, the birthday banner is old, from the party stash. Balloons and tassels are all from Target, as is my dress, and Asher’s darling pajamas are Cecil and Lou. I made the cake topper with paper straws, ribbon, paper and string.

This baby is my whole heart- and two years have flown.

love, Ravayna
